A 61 year old grandmother found with a trunk full of pot was convicted of drug running in what prosecutors said was an attempt to earn cash for a bingo habit.

State troopers found 10 bundles of pot totaling 214 pounds hidden in Leticia Villareal Garcia’s car trunk last year when they stopped her outside Bisbee.

Villareal, 61, told jurors before they convicted her Thursday that her only regular income was a $275 monthly welfare check, but she frequently played bingo and occasionally won thousands of dollars.
Prosecutor Doyle Johnstun said the game was Villareal’s undoing.

“People who play bingo almost every night of the week end up losing in the long run,” Johnstun told jurors. “The underlying issue is that she’s got a bingo problem, which explains why an otherwise nice person might get sucked into something like this.”

Jurors rejected Villareal’s argument that she’d been tricked into carrying the drugs.

She will be facing from 3 to 12 years in prison when she is sentenced December 18.

The bingo caller of the year was announced on Sunday and Brett Hyrjak walked off with the title and won himself a trip to Las Vegas. The annual search for the country’s top bingo caller at the Surrey Quays saw six regional winners battling it out before a panel of judges in a bid to win the title.

A caller at Bognor Regis’ Gala bingo Club, 30-year-old Brett was put through his paces – he faced a number of questions about the bingo industry and performed an entertainment piece on stage before calling some numbers. Not the first year he has made it to the finals of the competition, Brett said he was “absolutely speechless” at the win. He added: “I’m still gob smacked. I think it’s incredible to be named the best in your profession. For the next year, I’m going to be an ambassador for this great game.”

Introduced to bingo by his mum seven years ago, Brett spoke about the skills he thinks a top bingo caller should have, saying simply: “You need to have a friendly personality - I call it pizazz.”

Brett also won prize money of £500 and will head to Las Vegas with girlfriend Maxine (30) where he will have the chance to call the shots – and the numbers – at an African bingo hall.

Organizer and Judge Gloria Pattinson, who set up the competition 12 years ago, said: “I’m thrilled Brett has won - this year was his year. He kept the audience with him all the time. His showmanship was sensational.”

Gloria also added that the awards help to raise the profile of the British institution. She said that people normally have preconceived ideas about bingo and they think that it’s a lot of old ladies with blue rinses and it clearly isn’t.

Brett added: “It’s a fantastic feeling making people winners.”

A woman indicted for embezzling $250,000 to feed her bingo addiction is now counseling other gambling addicts as part of her recovery.

“I lived and breathed bingo,” said Jane Skavinsky, a life-long Morgantown resident. “It was something that I could do and enjoy. I could totally space out.”

Skavinsky spaced out a lot, after playing her first game in 1991, the entertainment soon turned into an obsession.

“At the height of my addiction, I was playing 72 cards (a game),” she said, adding most gamblers are good at math. “I always justified it with, ‘This is a fundraiser. This is acceptable. Everyone knows I’m here and no one says anything about it.’”

In 2002, someone finally noticed. “I was facing 216 criminal counts, and they carried a one- to-10-year sentence, so that totaled a possibility of 2,160 years in prison,” Scavinsky said.

In January 2003, a grand jury indicted her on five counts.

But she was losing between $300 and $500 a night. She started embezzling money from her employer, a Morgantown law firm. In 2002,

“I committed the crime,” she said, “and I deserved the punishment that I was facing.”

She only spent a little more than a year behind bars. As part of her parole, she’s now a counselor for other gambling addicts in Clarksburg and Morgantown.

“I am very sorry for the pain that I have caused,” she said. “I had a 20-month old granddaughter when I went to prison.”

She’s one of many who have called the state’s Problem Gambler’s Hotline. More than 4,000 people have joined her in the past six years. The vast majority were addicted to video poker. Others were addicted to slot machines, powerball and bingo. Scavinsky said it’s a problem few people understand. And unlike alcoholism, one that few people accept. Maybe that’s why it took her so long to hit rock bottom and realize that she had a problem.

“I was watching TV,” she said, “and an ad came on and said, ‘Do you have a gambling problem? Do you need help?’ And I realized at that point, that’s what I had.”

There are weekly meetings of Gambler’s Anonymous. In Clarksburg, the meeting is Tuesdays at the CBC Life Center and in Morgantown; the meeting is Thursdays at Scott’s Run Settlement House.
